Við þurfum að vera breytingin

Taking combined world-wide effort to eradicate the root of the problem is most likely the only solution in addressing the plastics pollution on our planet. In order to do that we should seek to minimize or completely abandon the production of plastic materials which can be replaced by environmentally friendlier products. We must be willing to change our consumer habits while using recycling as a crossover to bridge the plastic gap. Replacing plastics with biodegradable products which don't require special handling to enter the biological cycles should be our goal.

CHANGE IN PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION

Authorities should take decided world-wide action towards the plastic pollution. Judging by the lack of reaction by authorities, it is surprisingly little as the magnitude of the plastic pollution problem is known. Their actions can and will have a major role in the future development of this problem. While some cities, like San Francisco, and even some countries, like Mexico, Bangladesh and Rwanda, are taking charge and banning the plastic bags, others are still awaited to take similar action. San Francisco ceased the use of plastic bags in 2007 and is elevating the level of environmental protection by proposing to cease the plastic bottles too.

MYNDIR

Við þurfum að snúast frá línulegu hagkerfi „Take, make, use, dispose" og leggja áherslu á hringrásar hagkerfi þannig að framleiddar vörur geta komist aftur inn í ferlið sem hráefni án þess að skaða náttúruna. Það þarf að endurhugsa plastframleiðslu og því er afar jákvætt að sjá verkefni eins og The New Plastic Economy. Við hönnun og framleiðslu þarf að hugsa um líftíma og „endalok” vörunnar og koma henni aftur inn í hringrásina. Það þarf að huga að því hvaða efni eru notuð og hvernig þau eru samsett. Ein leið til minnka neikvæð áhrif plastmengunar er að takmarka eiturefni sem notuð eru í framleiðsluferlinu. Skapandi hugsun og þverfagleg samvinna sérfræðinga getur skipt sköpum fyrir framtíðina.

MULTIDISIPLINARY APPROACH

Working towards solutions

While the problem may look too complicated to resolve, there are ways to tackle it. First, we should abandon the linear “take, make, use, dispose” economy and let the circular economy in. This should allow the products to enter the production ring again as raw materials without having destructive effects to the nature. Plastic production needs re-thinking, and the ideologies described in “The New Plastic Economy” are examples to rely on. Design and production should choose the materials that allow the plastic products to re-enter the production process naturally and without bad consequences to the environment. Hazardous materials shouldn’t be used in products that can transfer them into the nature. It requires creative thinking and a multidisciplinary approach to reach these goals, regarding the fact that our future without a doubt greatly depends on it.
